We will not be pushed back
A powerfull speech by Suzanne van de Laar
On Thursday 27 February, the City of Antwerp welcomed Darklands to its historic Town Hall to celebrate the festival’s 15th anniversary. During the official reception, Suzanne van de Laar took the stage with a speech that resonated deeply with everyone present.
Suzanne is a long-standing activist, educator and proud voice within the fetish community. Her work has empowered countless people to embrace their identity without shame and to claim space in a world that often tells them to shrink.
Speaking to a room filled with chosen family, friends and allies, she reminded us why Beyond Darklands is more than just a festival. It’s a home.
She called out the silent rules, subtle exclusions and constant pressure to conform that still affect our community. Her message was clear: “We will not be pushed back, we will not be made invisible.”
Suzanne urged policymakers and allies to stand with us, not against us, because the fight for freedom, visibility and equality is far from over. Her words weren’t just inspiring, they were a rallying cry. No one should have to hide who they are.
