Capturing the spirit of the fetish community
Anyone who has walked into Darklands over the years has likely come across the work of René Zuiderveld. His signature style captures the strength, vulnerability and playfulness of the fetish community like no one else can. Darklands has been collaborating with René for many years, not only because he is a talented photographer, but because he is a true connector. His images breathe respect, pride and authenticity – values that lie at the core of our festival.
Born in 1950, René first worked as an editor and journalist for national and international gay magazines before turning to photography. While recovering from major surgery, he began photographing the streets of his hometown Amsterdam. As warm summer days faded into rain and fog, his lens shifted toward male models. What began as a recovery pastime evolved into a passion that has now spanned more than two decades.
René’s work ranges from portraits and sensual studies to theatrical, tongue-in-cheek glimpses into fetish and kink. Sometimes playful, sometimes erotic, but always honest and respectful. His photography is more than art – it’s a reflection of the community he knows, belongs to and continues to celebrate.
Now, after more than a year of preparation, René’s vision has finally been captured in a stunning photobook. With 200 carefully chosen images shot over a period of 20 years, the book is a powerful testament to his craft. For Darklands and for the wider fetish community, it’s not only a celebration of his work but also a reminder of how art and photography help make our world visible.
René Zuiderveld has been a trusted presence in our scene for many years. His photographs tell stories that connect, inspire and honor the community. And now, at last, those stories are bound together in a book that will carry them even further.
The limited edition book counts 220 pages and comes at a price of € 47,50 (excl. shipping). Want to have it on your coffee table? Contact René directly to order.
